Japanese Prime Minister Yuko Hatoyama of the DPJ (Democratic Party of Japan) resigned as prime minister. During his election campaign he promised to get the U.S. Marine air base located at Futenma, Okinawa moved off the island.

Mr. Hatoyama was not able to keep that campaign promise due to an agreement made with the previous Japanese administration and the USA to keep the island on the base.

That plus some campaign finance irregularities caused his poll numbers to sink below 20%, caused the resignation.
